Why I Love Vitamin C & Think You Should Too!

Apr 4, 2017 | Healing & Herbs, Nutrition

Today I am sharing why I’m (mildly) obsessed with vitamin C.

If I had to pick my favourite vitamin (which would be like choosing your favourite child) I would choose vitamin C. it is easily accessible, pretty cheap and it has a powerful impact on the body.

You have probably already heard of vitamin C and you know that it does your immune system good but what I am going into are all the other amazing aspects of the Vitamin and how you can have more of it in your day.

5 Reasons I Love Vitamin C….and you should too!

Vitamin C is super helpful in the production of collagen

Collagen is used for our skin, joints, organs and bone health. It will help your skin stay healthy (think anti-aging), support joint health, heart health and so much more. And vitamin C is needed for healthy levels of this.

Vitamin C helps with the production of Glutathione – the MASTER antioxidant!

Glutathione is our master antioxidant and we want lots of this in our bodies. Antioxidants reduce all the oxidative damage in the body that causes disease and other issues so we want as much of it as possible! Vitamin C helps in our body’s production of it.

But rewind – what is an antioxidant? Every second our bodies are undergoing oxidative stress due to the natural reactions and processes taking place. Oxidative stress is very dangerous for our bodies which is why nature created antioxidants to calm down and neutralise this problem.

Antioxidants reduce all the oxidative damage in the body that causes disease and other issues so we want as much of it as possible! And what vitamin C is…..an antioxidant!

Vitamin C contributes to the production of progesterone

Often in women with hormonal issues and imbalances, you find that progesterone levels are low.

Low progesterone can cause so many issues with fertility and sometimes miscarriages, alongside many other health problems too. And what do you know vitamin C is an important part in the production of progesterone which is great for us ladies! (Click here to geek out and read a study about it)

Vitamin C supports adrenal function

Your adrenals are on top of you kidney glands and if you have no idea what I am talking about then click here.

But basically they handle our stress hormones (and more but lets keep it simple) so if you are in a time of high stress, and/or are suffering from adrenal dysfunction/fatigue you need good amounts of vitamin C as it really helps to nourish and protect your adrenals and all the hormones they produce and release.

It soothes your body during stressful times

When you are physically or emotionally stressed like with the flu or an ongoing health problem, your body uses up vitamin C very, very quickly. If you are stressed out at work, are suffering from an auto-immune disorder, or a chronic health issue it is essential that you are getting a good amount of vitamin C (and magnesium too!) every day.

If you are stressed out at work, are suffering from an auto-immune disorder, or a chronic health issue it is essential that you are getting a good amount of vitamin C (and magnesium too!) every darn day.

How can you get more into your day?

Firstly eat it! In the form vegetables and fruits, a green smoothie every day is a brilliant way to increase your intake of Vitamin C, which is why I created my Green Smoothie Challenge.

Supplementation is beneficial for most people in my opinion (and that of noble prize winner Linus Paul who won the prize after his research into Vit C – geek out here).

I have the powdered ascorbic acid form of vitamin C and I tend to sprinkle it into drinks and smoothies throughout the day (only use 1-3 pinches at a time), this makes it a really cheap but a great and simple way of getting vitamin C into your diet on a budget. I also have it in 100mg pill form like this which I take with food.

Liposomal Vitamin C  is supposed to be more easily absorbed by your body but is much more expensive and it is worth discussing with your health coach, functional medicine doctor or practitioner to see if it would be helpful for you.

Dose?

Vitamin C is completely non-toxic, so 100% safe, but it really depends on how much stress your body is under. I would say at least 1000mg a day but note that is above the RDA.

Now you know why I love vitamin C and that it isn’t just about you immune health! And if you want to eat more vitamin C then make sure you grab your free green smoothie eguide with everything you need to get started and so you can get more goodness into your day.
