Why (some) Candles are Toxic & The Organic, Natural, Alternative.

no poo illustration copyI think there is some about age that causes your to fall in love with candles.
When I was as student I never saw the point of  scented candles, and stood bewildered when I received them as present (as you can imagine I was more of an incense stick girl = h.i.p.p.y)  . But now I have become one of those people who is VERY excited  when I receive an amazing smelling candle and love to have my home filled with wonderful fragrances in order to hide the musty laundry smell that comes from damp clothes being left in the washing machine too long….

But then I found out some rather sad news which I have tried to ignore for ages. (Sometimes I would just like to walk through life with my hands on my ears going ‘lalalala‘ so that I can be ignorant of the things I love that can harm my health and home.) But I have discovered that burning  normal candles can release toxic fumes into your atmosphere and doesn’t always support naturally healthy living. Plus my aim is to share all that I know and learn with you so you can go make your own powerful choices and be aware of potentially harmful things not only in your diet but also your environment.

What the problem with candles?

Well as this brilliant blogger shares:

“* Paraffin is the major ingredient in most conventional candles and is a sludge waste product from the petroleum industry. It releases carcinogenic chemicals when burned. The soot/fumes are similar to that released from a diesel engine and can be as dangerous as second-hand cigarette smoke. This can contribute to serious respiratory issues like asthma.
* Scented candles may have lead or lead cores in the wick, which releases dangerous amounts of lead into your home through the candle soot. Candle wicks are supposed to be made from pure paper or cotton, but a University of Michigan study in the late 1999 found that 30% of candles in the USA still released lead into the air, in amounts higher than is considered safe by the EPA (and personally, I’m not sure that I would consider there to be a “safe” level). Legislation was passed in the USA to ban lead in wicks in 2003, but it is still present in some candles which make their way onto store shelves, particularly those that are imported (made in China or Taiwan, for example). For my fellow Canadians, there has not yet been a Canadian ban on lead in candle wicks.
* Two particularly toxic chemicals, benzene and toluene, are found in the sooty residue from burning candles. Benzene is cancer-causing and toluene affects the central nervous system.
* Artificial scents and colors may be irritants to some people and/or trigger allergic reactions.
* Other toxic chemicals that may be present in the paraffin mixture and released through burning include: Acetone, Trichlorofluoromethane, Carbon Disulfide, 2-Butanone, Trichloroethane, Trichloroethene, Carbon Tetrachloride, Tetrachloroethene, Chlorobenzene, Ethylbenzene, Styrene, Xylene, Phenol, Cresol, Cyclopentene. Some of the toxins are found in other products such as paint, laquer and varnish removers– that’s potent and powerful stuff! SOURCE

Saddness.

That was until a brilliant new organic company sent me an organic, 100% natural candle to sample!

Hooray hope was lit ( that took me ages to come up with…) in my heart as I realised I don’t need to ditch filling my home with fragrant smells!

Nathalie Bond Organics is a brand new, UK based company that sells natural candles made from organic, natural and happy ingredients. The company was born after Nathalie got pregnant and became aware of how many synthetic chemicals are contained in scented candles and body and beauty products she used. With a baby due she felt it was time to make a clean break and say goodbye to products loaded with chemical ingredients. She made her first candles and blocks of soap in her kitchen just using the finest natural ingredients and hasn’t looked back since.

I was so excited to find out that organic and natural candles exist so I eagerly awaited my Lavender candle arrival in the post and boy what a treat it was when it arrived.

So here is my 100% honest thoughts:

( Please bear in mind that I will always give a 100% honest review about a products and never accept ‘bribes’ to write good things. )

  • I felt like a queen. The packaging was beautiful, creative and recycled! I really felt like I was getting completely spoiled with the luxurious style that this candle was presented and packaged!
  • Its smells amazing. As soon as I opened the box a wonderful lavender smell filled my (very large) font room.
  • It worked a treat. As soon as it was a lit a gentle  lavender fragrance filled my enormous front room. It wasn’t overpowering or sickly like other candles I have had  but the perfect balance of unobtrusive but very present fragrance.
  • Again did I mention it was beautiful?!classic_candles_lavender_2
  • It is made from sustainable natural wax and blended with pure organic essential oils so that only good things are released in my home.
  • Its local, UK produced and made by an awesome family business.
  • 20 % of Nathalie Bond Organics profits goes to helping some of the poorest in our world.

What is not to love?? So fear not all you candle lovers, organic naturally healthy candles exist ! Plus these would be the perfect Mothers Day gift as the whole package, product and presentation oozes luxury (without the price tag!), so go on why give one a try?
