For those of you who follow me on twitter, if you don’t I highly recommend myself as your tweeting health guru  @keziahalllhealth, will know that this weekend my main activity was the rooibos latte invention  which led to rooibos latte obsession.

As you will have read in my previous posts (Coffee Morning Heaven and Coffee Morning Scrub) I am a self confessed coffee addict. I used to help manage an artisan coffee house which meant I just got used to milky drinks throughout the day and I have always found comfort and solace in a warm milky beverage whatever the season.

Fast forward to present day and I am currently not drinking milk, as I am currently keeping a low/minimal lactose diet to help my gut heal (see here for my story).  Plus the fact that I have learned that my body is highly sensitive to caffeine, I notice the effect with even decaf coffee and I think after a few years of caffeine abuse (which living in Italy and working at a coffee shop will do to you!) my body and adrenal glands needed a caffeine break. I also don’t drink soya milk due to a whole host of reasons that I will go into at another time, all of which made my enjoyment of milky drinks rather hard.

I tried making my own cocoa but I love that dark chocolate taste so was using 1-2 tbsp per drink, which when cocoa contains around 8mg of caffeine per tablespoon, is not a caffeine free option.
I tried a ‘milky’ cinnamony type drink but it was quite rank, and the pepperminty version was even worse…

But thankfully perseverance prevailed and the Rooibos Latte was born!

About

Rooibos comes originally from South Africa and is as common as traditional tea in south african house. They normally drink it with tons of sugar and with/without milk.
Its benefits:

  • Naturally caffeine free.
  • Contain magnesium, zinc, iron and calcium.
  • Thought to be great for the skin.
  • An antispasmodic and used on infants with colic.
  • Filled with antioxidants –  Recent studies have demonstrated that the antioxidant effect of rooibos tea is made possible by superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic substances.  SOD is one of the best-known enzymes in the human body capable of neutralizing free oxygen radicals as soon as they are formed…An imbalance in the body’s oxidant levels is believed to be a contributing factor in a broad spectrum of diseases, including atherosclerosis, inflammatory disease (for example, arthritis), heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and AIDS.*
  • Easily available at supermarkets and budget friendly.

Basically this drink is one health boosting, hydrating, fat full drink – bring on coffee breaks!

Gingerbread Mocha Recipe – Dairy & Sugar-Free

If you didn't know already I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with coffee.   I love it, my gut and body historically have hated it. But all in all, I am a total coffee snob and fiend.   And there is nothing that screams Christmas more than a SEASONAL...
