Homemade & Healthy Burger Recipe

I am slightly obsessed with burgers.
This may come as a surprise to some of my new readers as eat meat (long standing readers will know I am obsessed with all food in general), especially red meat is not all that fashionable in the health world. Especially burgers. Health coaches and bloggers are meant to eat salads and smoothies, and while I do LOVE a good salad and am obsession with green smoothies, I love a big lump of meaty goodness.
And it seems my home town of Glasgow feels the same. We now have a ‘burger’ corner with about 4 different burger restaurants which all serve pretty much just burgers. So it seems I am not the only obsessed one!
But obviously we can’t afford to be eating out every night and lots of place also don’t provide gluten-free burgers, meaning they sneak in bread crumbs to bind and bulk out the burgers in order to use less meat.
And if you want to know more about why I eat meat then I wrote a series about it so make sure you click here to have a read.But in short, like with most things I eat, when it comes to meat it all comes down to quality (sorry I was really trying to make it rhymes but qualit-eat didn’t sound quite right!). I love vegans and veganism because I think the way we treat animals currently is quite shocking and eating sick, insane and drugged up animals it not going to impact our bodies in a positive way. But I do think eat quality, local, organic, happy meat is a good thing. We are all individual and we all need different things to thrive but for me I often crave beef so I aim to have it once a week along with lots of fish – but not in the same meal, the whole surf and turf thing has always seemed weird to me…
But back to the burgers. Burgers are just the best aren’t they? You can top them with cheese, guacamole, cooked onions (you know I LOVE onions!), bacon, eggs basically anything you fancy. Plus this Homemade & Healthy Burger Recipe is also super frugal too!! Because I like quality meats from happy animal that mean I need to pay more so I have to make them stretch over several meals and this recipe make about 10 burgers in one go!
This is also a super easy recipe too and has become a part of my husbands cooking repertoire, which is a good sign for even though he is the smartest Dr man I know who fills my chalkboard coffee table with maths equations that seem to have no beginning or end, in the kitchen he needs things to be very very simple 😉
Plus we are (hopefully) getting into the BBQ season so these babies are perfect for when the sun comes out. You can also freeze them once cooked so that you can have burgers to go when you need it most.
I don’t eat gluten or bread so I wrap my burgers in large lettuce leaves (think big romaine, iceberg, or kos types or large spring green leaves) or I even tried cabbage leaves too which was crunchier but still good. Homemade & Healthy Burgers
- 500 g organic mince
- 1 onion
- 125 g butternut squash raw
- Tsp dried oregano
- Tsp salt
- One egg whisked
- TO SERVE
- Several leaves of lettuce or cabbage to wrap around the burgers and any topping you fancy.
- In a food processor place the onion and butternut and other ingredients and blend until combined. OR grate both until very fine.
- Then mix in and add the mince. Pulse the for processor just a few time or mix by hands until fully combined.
- Place a large frying pan on the hob and brush with small amount of fat.
- Shape the mixture into burger shapes with you hands - you want them about 1.5-2cm thick. They will be sticky so just put them straight onto the hot pan. Do this with all the burgers as you go if you shape them all together they will just stick.
- Cook on a medium to low heat for about 10-15mins or until cooked all the way through. serve immediately with cheese, guacamole, salsa, eggs, chips or coleslaw!
