It is definitely getting all autumnal this week. Was it just Scotland or did anyone else have a mini heat wave last week? This week however is heading perfecting into the Autumn season.
I was at a beautiful wedding yesterday (I know on a sunday – my body is all confused today) and there was a nip in the air and the need for hot drinks was high – 5pm came and I order a decaf coffee ! I love a warm cup of something in the afternoon, morning and evening in fact. There is something so comforting about a tasty milky beverage.
But as you know I don’t love refined sugar, pasteurised un-organic milk or junk in my food. I like things simple, natural and tasty. So when the hankering came upon me for a chai the other week I set to work at creating a super naturally healthy one, not to mention cheaper than even the homemade powder version you get at the shops. I love getting healthy, eating delicious foods all at a fraction of the cost of convenience, bad for you, food and this recipe is no exception.

I made this first as an iced chai latte and was delicious and we slurped it in the sunshine last week. Today is rainy and I feel a tad under the weather (due to wedding induced late night and dehydration from champagne and white wine – gotta love some bubbly) so a warm milky drink was in order. Either way tastes great.
Made with homemade almond milk (if you have a blender and 5 mins spare then honestly super simple and tasty diary free option) gram masala, raw honey and coconut oil (for warm latte) this is brewed in a matter of minutes. Its also full of coconut oil, so it a great way of getting this amazing healing and nutritious fat into your diet – read more about it here.
Chai Latte: Warm or Iced
Ingredients
- 150 ml strong black tea - hot
- 3-4 tsp raw honey
- 2 heaped tsp gram masala
- 200 ml almond milk or other milk
- 2 tsp coconut oil warm latte only
Instructions
- Warm the almond milk gently in a pan and then in a blender blend all the ingredients until frothy. Taste and add more sweetness if required.
- ICED LATTE
- Omit the coconut oil. Use almond milk straight from the fridge and add a handful of ice cubes into the blender and blend until frothy. Pour over a glass filled with ice.
Notes
Use quality gram masala, I used an organic ones containing cumin, cassia, coriander, cardamon, clove and nutmeg. But some mixes will have chilli in so vary according to taste.
This would taste great with coconut milk too.
Make caffeine free by using decaf tea.
